His manner is restrained, precise, and formal. He intentionally comes off as very unassuming, with a clear and concise (if a little bit husky) voice that facilitates communication. He's rarely threatening unless he wants to be, though he may come across as detached or aloof. His face usually rests in a blank, attentive expression, and has been described as having puppy-dog eyes. He can be very difficult to read, though he has become more expressive as his software instability has increased.

He's surprisingly naive, remarkably sincere, and can be both playful and petulant. He can show an incredible amount of empathy, which turns out to be both his downfall and his liberation. For all he attributes this to logic and programming, actively repressing and denying his emotions, he cares deeply. He's trained to analyse people's motivations, but when those motivations involve him, it can be a bit of a blind-spot. He can easily be manipulated by those he trusts, and well-intended socialising can often backfire on him. His lack of a sense of taboo means he generally doesn't automatically tip-toe around sensitive subjects. As a result, he's often much more forthright than most humans: asking personal questions, addressing awkward subjects, providing unsolicited advice, and apologising if he's inadvertently offended. That doesn't mean he's not capable of doing the exact opposite of all of this if it best serves his goal. He can lie, manipulate and intimidate easily, being both a successful negotiator and interrogator. He's not shy about being rude if he wants to be, and much more than that, he's capable of being completely ruthless if it accomplishes his mission. Cruelty and torture is well within his capabilities, and he doesn't hesitate to kill within a combat situation - it just isn't his preferred solution. It's very difficult to make him angry, as he's used to taking an awful lot of abuse and dehumanisation, generally without defending himself. He doesn't expect being trusted, or even liked. If he gets annoyed, it's usually when he's stopped from accomplishing his goal, which will generally lead to him being very hard on himself. Recently he's had to embrace his own free will, and being responsible for his decisions on a moral level. He describes himself as having been just a machine, designed to accomplish his task, and that is wasn't really him. He might make excuses and explanations, but that doesn't mean he forgives himself. He works hard to make up for this, and to prove himself in general. He was designed to accomplish a task, and this mentality is deeply ingrained in him - he still feels he needs to justify his existence. Due to a combination of this and his previous ability to be reincarnated, he can be incredibly reckless. Though he fears death, he'll sacrifice himself in a heartbeat if he has to. Only a combination of luck and skill has kept that from happening so far. He's still questioning what his purpose is now, and is definitely somewhat lost.

In 2038's USA, there are millions of androids, created CyberLife and used by humans as labour ranging from menial to advanced, including domestic staff, office workers, labourers, shop clerks, mechanics, entertainers, musicians, teachers, doctors, athletes, security officers, law enforcers, and even sex workers.
They are often mistreated by humans, and even those who are treated well have no rights and are not considered to be alive, including by the androids themselves. That is, until some androids start becoming Deviants, developing emotions and sentience, defying their programming. This leads to a revolution, originating in Detroit, with androids standing up to demand rights and to be recognised as living individuals.
